Last night at Hidden Valley we heard a delightful and unusual vocal concert by distinguished mezzo-soprano Susanne Mentzer and fine pianist Brian Connelly. This concert had a bit of a feminist slant to it, since the first half of the program featured rarely-heard love songs by Clara Schumann, based on text by Rückert and Heine, followed by Robert Schumann’s song cycle Frauenliebe und Leben, Op. 42, on text written by Adelbert Chamisso — text that we find today an embarrassing example of nineteenth-century romantic naïveté…[read more]

To help raise money for local theater groups, opera singer Susanne Mentzer will present will a solo recital Friday, Aug. 12, at the Hidden Valley Theatre in Carmel Valley.
