Reg Huston: email@example.com
Reg Huston, Founder and Executive Director of S.T.A.R. Foundation, has had a life long connection with the theatrical experience and felt a desire to help provide opportunities for young people to have those same experiences. S.T.A.R. Foundation was created out of that desire. A Board of Directors was formed and the Foundation received tax-exempt, non-profit status in July of 2008.
For 35 years, he has performed leading roles with The Western Stage, Pacific Repertory Theater and the Forest Theater Guild. He has also performed as a vocal soloist with every major performing ensemble in Monterey County. He is most known for his portrayal of Tevye in “Fiddler on the Roof”-a role he has performed over 100 times, at least.
Trained in classical voice, Reg received his Bachelor and Masters of Music degrees from the University of the Pacific Conservatory of Music in Stockton, CA. He was a Charter Member of the Hidden Valley Opera (in 1973) as part of Hidden Valley Music Seminars- an Institute of the Arts in Carmel Valley. He went on to complete post-graduate studies at Music Academy of the West in Santa Barbara and with the Merola Opera program of San Francisco Opera. He also studied at the Conservatory of Vienna, Austria, (1976-1977).
He returned to Hidden Valley Opera where he performed over 30 roles from 1977-1986. Besides performing onstage, he also oversaw the care for many programs for high school students (summer orchestra and choral programs) as well as outreach programs for middle schools throughout Monterey County (called Sound Encounters). Reg was also in charge of the Elisabeth Schwarzkopf Vocal Master Class taught by the famous international soprano.
In 1986, Reg was chosen to participate in the Salzburg Mozarteum (a program for high level singers running concurrently with the Salzburg Festival each summer). While there, he performed Figaro in the “Marriage of Figaro”, directed by Peter Ustinov. As a result of his success at the Mozarteum, Reg was offered a two-year contract with the Hamburg State Opera in Hamburg, Germany, where he served as a soloist from 1986 through 1988.
After returning to the United States, Reg became Director of Programs with Youth Music Monterey (1988-1994) which sponsored the Youth and Honors Orchestras of Monterey County and Summer Music Monterey – 2 to 3 week camps in jazz and orchestral music for high school students. In 1994, Reg left Youth Music Monterey to oversee bingo fundraising activities for Salinas Valley Aquatics (until 2006). He became bingo manager for various bingo operations, including: Palma High School, Franciscan Workers, Forest Theater Guild, Food Bank, and the Monterey Bay Swim Club.
He is the proud father of two adult sons, Max and Jesse, who have both acted in productions in Monterey County.
